- Hello Dobbs,
- Guess we missed each other on Fri. I was listening most of the day, but
- spent some time going to the new BJ's in So.Attleboro. You've gotta get
- there... talk about cheap food.
- Anyway, yes, I contacted everybody about the power supplies. Nothing
- yet, but at least I am a lot more familiar with that SLMR program now
- and how to get around it.
- Cleaned the gutters on the garage today and also filled up 5 bags with
- leaves and it still looks like we haven't raked.
- So, what's up on your end? Are you still looking for another apt?
- If you've got a chance, give me a call on .985 tonight after 7:00.

- I am intrested in tearing apart a Icom 80 series battery pack to make
- a sturdy way to connect my 2SAT into my car. Because I would like to
- keep this small and inexpensive I decided I would check the net for
- people who might have an old (or unused) BP-81 or BP-82 that they
- would be willing to sell for $10 or so before using a new or working
- pack.
-
- I would also consider trading my working BP-82 for a dead pack.
-
- Please Email if you are intrested.

- There is a thing called 'physics' that limits the ability of the radio
- to lock on frequency and rx/tx too far out of band. The mods available
- for the microprocessor extend the capability of the radio to tune to a
- larger band spread than this physical limitation. You're not missing a

- You are confusing the General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) and
- the Business Radio Service. GMRS is UHF only and does require
- a license <period>. Radio Shack (and others) sell low cost GMRS
- transceivers. They also sell VHF radios set up on the "itinerant"
- business band frequencies (151.625, ...). These radios also
- require a license. Business band can also include UHF, but these
- radios don't seem to be quite so prevalent, at least not at Rad Shack.
-
- Give a listen on 151.625 and you will hear all kinds of communications,
- mostly unidentified and (I presume) unlicensed.
-
- IMHO Radio Shack should be sure to inform the user that a license
- is required. (I believe that the license form is generally included
- with the radio, but....). RS, of course, can't guarantee that the
- radio is used properly.
-
- These same type of radios (GMRS and itinerant Business band) are
- showing up in all kinds of catalogs from outdoor products companies to
- computer equipment suppliers ("handheld communications for use when
- setting up cabling for LANs"). Most of these companies are doing a
- poor job of communicating the license requirements. :-(

- For abuse, I think you can't beat (ahem) Motorola public-safety gear.
- Particularly the older units are really tough. I've seen them dropped,
- crushed, immersed, and everything else, and their the "Timex" of HTs.
-
- If you can find a surplus unit and pull it into 2-Meters (narrow band,
- of course), you couldn't do much better.
-
- As things have gotten smaller, they've gotten more delicate, naturally.
-
- Check, also, with a commercial radio shop in your area. It might be
- expensive, but they probably can order/program you a ham-band version
- of a ruggedized HT.

-
- OK... I looked up an old message which summarized QST lab test results for a
- number of receivers, and the FT-747GX had the following test results:
-
- MDS: -136dBm
- IMD Dynamic Range: 90dB
- Blocking Dynamic Range: 109.5dB
- Third Order Intercept: -1dBm
-
- The Ten-Tec spec for Dynamic Range looks like a blocking dynamic range
- spec, and is 5dB poorer. The third order intercept is very similar.
- As the specs indicate, the 747 is somewhat more sensitive.
-
- I've always been rather impressed with the performance of the 747 front
- end, considering it is an econo-box with many features. The 747 front
- end consists of an elliptic 5th order (or 7?) low pass filter with a
- corner frequency of 30Mhz and a zero (null) located directly on the 47Mhz
- first IF. Then there is a deck of diode-switched elliptic band-pass filters,
- again about 5th order, then an active JFET singly-balanced mixer. The mixer
- feeds a 47Mhz crystal filter... Not a bad design at all...
-
- I'd be interested in seeing the ARRL test specs for the 555, since this
- comparison here is between published specs and lab test results. If Ten-Tec
- is conservative, then maybe the Scout 555 will look better in the lab. If the
- Ten-Tec specs are optimistic, then the advantage will be even stronger for
- Yaesu.
